9 Best Places to Visit on the Yorkshire Coast

The Yorkshire Coast is one of those places where you can visit again and again and still find somewhere new to explore.

From the cobbled streets and famous Abbey of Whitby to the sweeping beaches of Filey and Runswick Bay, dramatic cliffs at Flamborough and the picture-perfect fishing village of Staithes, there is far more to the Yorkshire Coast than a traditional seaside day out.

Whether you’re planning a Yorkshire Coast holiday, a weekend away or simply looking for the best places to visit during your stay, here are nine places we think deserve a spot on your itinerary.

1. Whitby

It would be almost impossible to write a list of the best places to visit on the Yorkshire Coast without starting with Whitby.

Famous for its dramatic Abbey overlooking the town, Whitby combines history, seaside charm, independent shops, fantastic food and some of the most recognisable views on the Yorkshire Coast.

Climb the famous 199 steps towards Whitby Abbey, wander through the old town, explore the harbour and, of course, find yourself some proper Whitby fish and chips.

Whitby is also a fantastic base for exploring the wider coast, with Staithes, Robin Hood’s Bay and Runswick Bay all within easy reach.

2. Scarborough

For classic British seaside charm, it’s hard to beat Scarborough.

With its two beaches, historic castle, harbour, promenade and famous Open Air Theatre, Scarborough has something for pretty much everyone.

Families can spend the day on the beach, couples can explore the restaurants and bars, and walkers can head out along the coastline for some spectacular views.

Scarborough also has a packed calendar of events throughout the year, making it a great destination for a weekend break on the Yorkshire Coast.

3. Flamborough Head

If dramatic coastal scenery is your thing, put Flamborough Head on the list.

The towering limestone cliffs, lighthouse and views across the North Sea make this one of the most spectacular stretches of the Yorkshire coastline.

It’s also an excellent destination for walking and wildlife spotting. The area is particularly well known for its seabirds, and during the warmer months the cliffs become home to large breeding colonies.

Bring your walking shoes, your camera and a jacket. This is Yorkshire, after all.

4. Filey

Filey offers a slightly slower pace than some of the bigger seaside resorts.

Its huge sandy beach is perfect for families, beach walks and those days when you simply want to find a spot on the sand and switch off.

The promenade and traditional seaside atmosphere make Filey a lovely place to spend a few hours, particularly if you’re looking for somewhere a little quieter than Scarborough during the busy summer months.

And yes, fish and chips are very much encouraged.

5. Staithes

Staithes feels like you’ve stepped into another world.

This tiny former fishing village is tucked between the cliffs, with narrow cobbled streets winding their way down towards the sea.

It’s wonderfully picturesque and has a very different atmosphere from the larger coastal towns.

Take your time exploring the village, wander along the harbour and climb back up towards the cliffs for those incredible views.

Staithes is also closely connected with Captain James Cook, who spent part of his childhood here.

6. Runswick Bay

Looking for a beautiful Yorkshire beach?

Runswick Bay should definitely be on your list.

The sweeping sandy beach is ideal for families, with opportunities for rock pooling, fossil hunting, swimming and coastal walks.

It’s also a great place to simply spend a few hours doing absolutely nothing — which, let’s be honest, is sometimes exactly what you want from a holiday.

If you’re staying around Whitby or the North Yorkshire coast, Runswick Bay makes a fantastic day trip.

7. Robin Hood’s Bay

Just south of Whitby sits one of the Yorkshire Coast’s most charming villages.

Robin Hood’s Bay is a maze of narrow streets and old buildings leading down towards a beautiful sandy beach.

It’s a brilliant place to explore on foot, and the surrounding coastline offers some fantastic walking opportunities.

It’s also a particularly good choice for dog owners and families looking for a traditional coastal day out.

And if you’ve got the energy, the coastal walks around Robin Hood’s Bay can provide some spectacular views across the North Sea.

8. Saltburn-by-the-Sea

Head north and you’ll eventually reach Saltburn-by-the-Sea.

With its Victorian architecture, famous pier, beach and cliff lift, Saltburn has retained plenty of its traditional seaside character while also developing a reputation as a great destination for surfing and independent food and drink.

It’s a little further from Whitby and Scarborough, but if you’re planning a longer Yorkshire Coast holiday, it’s well worth exploring.

9. The Yorkshire Coast Itself

Okay, we’re cheating slightly with number nine.

But one of the best things about the Yorkshire Coast is that you don’t necessarily need to have a specific destination planned.

Some of the best memories come from simply getting in the car, finding a coastal walk, stopping at a village you’ve never visited before and seeing where the day takes you.

From dramatic cliffs and sandy beaches to hidden coves, fishing villages and sweeping sea views, the coastline between Flamborough, Scarborough, Whitby, Staithes and beyond is packed with places worth discovering.

How Many Days Do You Need on the Yorkshire Coast?

That’s the beauty of it — you can see plenty in a weekend, but we’d recommend staying longer if you can.

A 2-night Yorkshire Coast break gives you enough time to explore one or two main destinations without rushing.

Stay for three or four nights and you can start venturing further along the coast, perhaps combining Whitby with Robin Hood’s Bay, Staithes and Runswick Bay.

And if you’re staying for a week, you’ve got plenty of time to explore both Whitby and Scarborough, head inland towards the North York Moors and still have time for a few lazy afternoons on the beach.

Where Should You Stay?

Choosing the right base can make a huge difference to your Yorkshire Coast holiday.

If you’re looking for history, independent shops, harbour views and easy access to some of the area’s best-known attractions, Whitby makes a fantastic base.

Scarborough is ideal if you want traditional seaside attractions, beaches, entertainment and plenty of restaurants and activities on your doorstep.

Alternatively, staying somewhere a little quieter gives you the opportunity to explore the coast at your own pace before returning to your holiday cottage or apartment at the end of the day.

At Yorkshire Coast Holiday Lets, we have a selection of holiday cottages and apartments across the Yorkshire Coast, including properties in and around Whitby and Scarborough.

Whether you’re looking for a dog-friendly holiday let, a family-friendly cottage, a luxury apartment or a property with sea views, you can browse our accommodation and find somewhere to make your Yorkshire Coast base.

Ready to Explore the Yorkshire Coast?

There are plenty of reasons to visit the Yorkshire Coast — but you don’t need to try and cram everything into one trip.

Pick a few places, slow down, explore the coastline and leave something for your next visit.

Because that’s the thing about the Yorkshire Coast.

You come for Whitby. You stay for the coast. And you inevitably start planning your next visit before you’ve even gone home.
