Are you visiting Whitby this Autumn or Halloween? Then you have to visit Illuminated Abbey! A night to see Whitby Abbey lit up in all the colours of the rainbow.
But if you’re able, the very best way to access the abbey is by climbing (and counting!) Whitby’s famous 199 steps. Entrance fees for Whitby Abbey are charged, though access is free for members of English Heritage.
Enjoy the Gothic ruins lit up with spectacular illuminations and see live performances as you wander round the abbey this Halloween. From the Whitby harbour area, the abbey can only be directly reached on foot via the 199 Steps. Alternatively, a well-signposted road leads from the town outskirts to the cliff-top abbey.
Suitable for the entire family, Illuminated Abbey is a chance to see the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s Dracula in an entirely new light. This year, there is a twist on the usual show as they celebrate 125 years of Dracula. The event is very family-friendly, and there is lots to expect, such as marshmallows to toast around fire pits, local food and drinks to enjoy, and it’s a great way to spend time outdoors together. There will be actors roaming around in costume that you can interact with, too; remember, they stay in character the entire time! Don’t fear, though; you can easily avoid them if you have small children. This is a fantastic way to celebrate Halloween with the entire family.
The event is held outside of site opening hours therefore it does not include entry during the day. You can buy an admission separately if you wish to visit the site before the event.
