Built in 1884, the Saltburn Cliff Lift is the oldest operating water-balanced funicular lift in Britain. This extraordinary piece of engineering was designed to transport people from the top of the cliffs down to the lower promenade and pier—and it still does so to this day!
The lift is powered by gravity and water: two cars are connected by a cable, and water is added to a tank beneath the car at the top. The heavier car then descends, pulling the lighter car up.
