What's On in Whitby October 2026 | Goth Weekend & Events

The wind carried a chill that only Whitby could conjure. Perched high above the North Sea, the ruins of Whitby Abbey stood tall against the grey October sky — their Gothic arches etched in time, their stones whispering stories of monks, legends, and one particularly famous vampire.

It was the first day of Halloween Half Term, and families began to make their way up the 199 steps from the old town below. Children clutched their coats, their excitement barely contained. The Abbey, silhouetted against the horizon, looked both inviting and eerie — the perfect stage for a week of ghostly adventures.

Inside the gates, the air buzzed with laughter and the crunch of autumn leaves underfoot. A friendly English Heritage guide handed out a map marked with clues — “Find the lost spirits of Whitby,” it read.
And so began the trail.

Every corner of the Abbey seemed alive with mystery. One group of children crouched by the weathered walls, hunting for their next clue, while parents followed behind, cameras in hand, capturing the windswept smiles. The ruins framed every photo beautifully — their arches open to the sea, the sky, and imagination.

At half past ten, the storytelling began.

Gathered in the heart of the Abbey, visitors leaned in as the storyteller’s voice rose and fell — spinning tales of ghostly monks and the haunting beauty that inspired Bram Stoker’s Dracula. The sound of the waves crashing below seemed to echo each eerie moment.

As midday approached, the sun broke through the clouds, bathing the ancient stones in gold. Children now played ghostly games on the green, re-creating their own haunted adventures. Some sat quietly, crafting stories about the Abbey’s spirits — names and fates invented on the spot, creativity sparked by history.

Later, as the afternoon light softened, the ruins took on a different kind of magic. The laughter faded into hushed awe. Parents stood back, taking in the view — the Abbey silhouetted against the setting sun, the sea shimmering below. The day had been full of fun, but something about this place stayed with everyone who visited.

Perhaps it was the sense of stepping through centuries of stories — from monks to novelists to curious families on half-term break. Perhaps it was the feeling that in Whitby, history never quite sleeps.

If you plan to visit this Halloween, Whitby Abbey welcomes you from Saturday, October 25 to Sunday, November 2, 2025, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm each day. Bring your curiosity, your sense of adventure, and maybe a warm coat. You’ll find not just a family day out — but a story waiting to be told.

And as you leave, walking back down those famous 199 steps, don’t forget to look back one last time. The Abbey will still be there — standing proud, mysterious, and just a little bit haunted.
