What's On in Whitby October 2026 | Goth Weekend & Events

If you’re planning a visit to the Yorkshire Coast, Robin Hood’s Bay is one destination you won’t want to miss. Located just five miles south of Whitby and 15 miles north of Scarborough, this picturesque fishing village sits within the North York Moors National Park and offers breathtaking coastal scenery, a rich history, and charming cobbled streets that attract visitors year-round.

The Origins of Robin Hood’s Bay

Despite its famous name, the connection between Robin Hood and the village remains a legend. According to local folklore, Robin Hood once defended the coast against French pirates, returning the stolen loot to local fishermen and villagers. Although there is no historical evidence to confirm this tale, the story adds a layer of charm and intrigue to the village’s name.

Early Settlement and Viking Influence

The area surrounding Robin Hood’s Bay has a long and fascinating history. By around 1000 AD, the neighbouring villages of Raw and Thorpe in Fylingdales were settled by Norwegians and Danes. After the Norman Conquest in 1069, Northern England—including Fylingdales—was left in ruins, and the land was eventually granted to Tancred the Fleming by William the Conqueror before passing into the hands of the Abbot of Whitby.

The original settlements were located about a mile inland, but by the 1500s, a thriving fishing community had developed directly on the coast. The earliest known written record of “Robin Hoode Baye” dates back to 1536, when it was mentioned by John Leland.

Smugglers, Shipbuilders, and Fishermen

Throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, Robin Hood’s Bay became known for smuggling. Its narrow, twisting streets and hidden passageways made it ideal for smugglers to move goods undetected. Fishing, shipbuilding, and trade also played a major role in the village’s growth and prosperity.
