What’s On the Yorkshire Coast in 2026? The Best Upcoming Events in Whitby & Scarborough

There’s never really a quiet season on the Yorkshire Coast.

From traditional seaside events and live music to food, festivals, history, Halloween and some of the biggest weekends in Whitby’s calendar, there’s always another reason to pack your bags and head for the coast.

If you’re planning a Yorkshire Coast holiday in 2026, here are some of the upcoming events taking place in Whitby and Scarborough — and a few good reasons to turn an event visit into a proper weekend away.

Whitby Folk Week – 22nd–28th August 2026

Whitby Folk Week is one of the town’s best-loved annual events, bringing traditional music, dance and storytelling to venues throughout Whitby.

The town comes alive with performances, workshops and plenty of atmosphere, making it a fantastic time to experience Whitby at its most energetic.

If you’re planning to visit, booking accommodation within walking distance of the town centre means you can enjoy the events without worrying about driving home afterwards.

Whitby Pirate Festival – 28th–31st August 2026

Fancy something a little different?

The Whitby Pirate Festival takes over the town at the end of August, with a fun-filled weekend celebrating all things pirate-themed.

It’s particularly popular with families and anyone who enjoys Whitby’s slightly eccentric side. With the harbour, old town and famous Abbey providing the backdrop, it’s a brilliant excuse for a late-summer coastal break.

And, of course, you can’t visit Whitby without finding time for fish and chips.

Whitby Goth Weekend – 30th October–1st November 2026

Few events are as closely associated with Whitby as Whitby Goth Weekend.

The twice-yearly event attracts visitors from across the UK, transforming the town with incredible outfits, alternative fashion, live music and a wonderfully unique atmosphere.

The autumn weekend is also a great opportunity to experience Whitby outside the traditional summer season.

Imagine exploring the atmospheric old town, walking along the harbour as the autumn weather rolls in, visiting the Abbey and then retreating to a warm, comfortable holiday apartment or cottage.

It’s Whitby doing what Whitby does best.

Illuminated Whitby – 23rd–31st October 2026

If you love seeing historic places brought to life after dark, Illuminated Whitby is another event worth putting in the diary.

Taking place towards the end of October, it adds another reason to visit Whitby during the autumn half-term period.

Combine it with a walk around the old town, the harbour, Whitby Abbey and some traditional Yorkshire food for a brilliant autumn getaway.

Spooked at Whitby Museum – 31st October 2026

And naturally, Halloween in Whitby wouldn’t be complete without something a little spooky.

Spooked at Whitby Museum takes place on Halloween itself, offering another reason for visitors to make the journey to this famously atmospheric Yorkshire town.

With Whitby’s Dracula connections, historic buildings and winding streets, it’s difficult to think of a more appropriate place to spend Halloween.

Whitby Lit Fest – 19th–22nd November 2026

For something a little more relaxed, the Whitby Lit Fest takes place in November.

The event celebrates books, reading and literary culture, making it a great choice for anyone looking for a quieter autumn or early winter break.

November in Whitby can be particularly atmospheric. The summer crowds have disappeared, the harbour feels peaceful and the town becomes the perfect place for a slower few days by the sea.

What’s Happening in Scarborough?

Whitby isn’t the only place putting on a show.

Just a short drive along the coast, Scarborough has its own packed calendar of events throughout the rest of 2026.

Oliver’s Mount 80th Anniversary Gold Cup – 4th–6th September 2026

Motorsport fans won’t want to miss this special event at Oliver’s Mount.

The 80th Anniversary Gold Cup takes place from 4th–6th September, bringing the excitement of racing to one of Scarborough’s most famous motorsport locations.

It’s an ideal excuse for a weekend break — particularly if you’re travelling with friends or family who love motorsport.

Scarborough Pride – 12th September 2026

Scarborough Pride returns on 12th September, bringing colour, celebration and community spirit to the town.

It’s another fantastic opportunity to combine an event with a coastal getaway and explore Scarborough’s beaches, restaurants, bars and attractions while you’re here.

Scarborough Jazz Festival – 25th–27th September 2026

If live music is more your thing, the Scarborough Jazz Festival runs from 25th–27th September.

Three days of music combined with the Yorkshire coastline sounds like a pretty good weekend to us.

Scarborough Fair – 10th–11th October 2026

Scarborough Fair returns in October, bringing another traditional event to the Yorkshire Coast.

October is a particularly lovely time to visit Scarborough. The beaches are quieter, the autumn scenery starts to appear and you can still enjoy everything the town has to offer without the peak summer crowds.

Halloween at Scarborough Castle

For families and Halloween fans, Scarborough Castle is also getting into the spooky spirit during the October half-term period.

A historic castle overlooking the North Sea is already an impressive place to visit — add Halloween activities and you’ve got a brilliant autumn day out.

Scarborough Sparkle – Late November 2026

As Christmas approaches, Scarborough Sparkle is expected to return to the Open Air Theatre in late November.

It’s a great opportunity to combine a festive event with a weekend exploring Scarborough and getting into the Christmas spirit.

Scarborough Lights – 11th November–18th December 2026

The festive season continues with Scarborough Lights, running from 11th November through to 18th December.

The event features night-time displays and drone displays, giving visitors another reason to explore the town after dark.

Why Not Turn an Event Into a Weekend Away?

The beauty of living on the Yorkshire Coast is that you don’t need to travel hundreds of miles for a memorable break.

Whether you’re heading to Whitby for Goth Weekend, taking the family to the Pirate Festival, enjoying live music at Folk Week, visiting Scarborough for Pride or simply looking for an excuse to escape for a couple of nights, there are plenty of events to build a short break around.

And you don’t necessarily need a full week away.

Sometimes Friday night to Sunday morning is enough.

Stay somewhere close to the action, explore the town at your own pace, grab some good food, enjoy the coastline and then head home feeling like you’ve actually had a break.
