What's On in Whitby October 2026 | Goth Weekend & Events

If you’re planning a Yorkshire Coast getaway, Whitby usually gets most of the attention.

Fair enough — it’s Whitby.

But Scarborough deserves a lot more credit than it gets.

It’s one of the easiest places to book for a break because there’s a bit of everything. You’ve got the classic seaside feel, plenty to do with kids, some really good views, and easy access to the countryside if you want more than just beach and promenade. Whether you’re planning a weekend away, a family trip in the school holidays, or just a couple of nights by the sea, Scarborough is a solid choice.

Two bays, two very different feels

One of the best things about Scarborough is that it doesn’t all feel the same.

South Bay is the more traditional seaside side of town. That’s where you get the promenade, amusements, fish and chips, arcades, and that busier holiday atmosphere people usually picture when they think of Scarborough.

North Bay is a bit calmer. It feels more open, a little less hectic, and it’s great if you want beach walks, sea views and a slightly quieter base.

Then in between the two, you’ve got Scarborough Castle up on the headland, which gives you some of the best views in the area and is one of those places that’s actually worth doing, not just ticking off.

Plenty to do

Scarborough is good for short breaks because you don’t need some massive itinerary to make the most of it.

You can spend the morning walking the seafront, head up to the castle, grab lunch somewhere decent, and still have loads of options for the rest of the day.

If you want something more active, North Yorkshire Water Park is just outside Scarborough and is a great shout. There’s paddleboarding, kayaking, wakeboarding and the big inflatable aquapark, plus family-friendly activities like the mini electric boats. It’s a good one if you want to mix the seaside with something a bit different.

If you’re after something more traditional, mini golf is always a winner, especially with kids. And if the weather turns — because, let’s be honest, this is the Yorkshire coast — escape rooms are a good backup that still makes the day feel fun rather than written off.

Alpamare is another one people often look at if they want something more activity-based, especially for families. Heated outdoor pools, slides, wave pool — it’s one of those places that can easily fill half a day on its own.

It’s not just about the beach

Another reason Scarborough works so well is that you’re not limited to one kind of break.

If you want beach time, you’ve got it. If you want open countryside, walking routes and a quieter day out, the North York Moors are well within reach.

That’s a big part of the appeal really — you can stay by the sea but still get out into the Yorkshire countryside without having to spend ages in the car.

Good for families, couples and dog-friendly breaks

Scarborough is one of those places that works for all sorts of stays.

For families, there’s plenty to do and it still feels like a proper seaside holiday.

For couples, it’s easy. Sea views, walks, decent food, and enough going on without it feeling overdone.

And if you’re bringing the dog, the Yorkshire Coast is generally a really good option. Yorkshire Coast Holiday Lets already has plenty of dog-friendly properties, which makes life much easier if you want to bring the whole family without compromising on where you stay.

A good base

Scarborough is great in its own right, but it also works really well as a base if you want to explore a bit more.

Filey is easy to get to. Whitby’s doable. The villages, the moors, the rest of the coastline — it’s all close enough that you can see plenty without having to keep packing up and moving on.

That’s ideal if you like a bit of variety but still want one comfortable base for the trip.

Picking the right place to stay

The place you stay makes a big difference, especially in Scarborough, because you’ve got a few different styles of breaks you can go for.

Some people want sea views and to be right near the beach. Some want somewhere quieter. Some need parking. Some want dog-friendly. Some want enough space for the family without feeling crammed in.

That’s where it helps to book through somewhere that actually knows the area and has a good range of properties to choose from.

Yorkshire Coast Holiday Lets has a mix of stays across Scarborough and the surrounding area, from sea-view apartments to dog-friendly cottages and larger places for family breaks. It gives you more choice than just scrolling a booking platform and hoping for the best.

Why it’s worth booking direct

One of the easiest things you can do when booking a coastal break is to check the direct site first.

Booking direct through Yorkshire Coast Holiday Lets means:

no platform fees
added perks you might not get elsewhere
local support if you need help before or during your stay
a better chance of finding the right property for the kind of trip you actually want

So if you’re thinking about a Yorkshire Coast break and want somewhere with a bit of range, Scarborough is definitely worth a look.

Sometimes the best breaks are the simplest ones,

really — sea air, somewhere comfortable to stay, good food, and a couple of days that feel easy from start to finish.
