Yorkshire Coast Breaks for Couples: The Coast, Without the Kids

There’s something rather lovely about getting away as a couple.

No school bags to pack. No arguments over what to eat. No rushing back because someone is tired, hungry or bored.

Just the two of you, a few days by the sea and the freedom to spend your time exactly how you want.

The Yorkshire Coast is brilliant for family holidays, but it has another side that is perhaps even better suited to couples. Quiet coastal walks, long breakfasts, independent cafés, good food, beautiful scenery and those little moments where you realise you haven’t had to look at the clock all day.

Whether you’re planning a romantic weekend, a midweek escape or simply fancy a few days away together, here’s how to make the most of a couples’ break on the Yorkshire Coast.

Start the day slowly

One of the best things about a break without the kids is that there’s no need to be up and out at 8am.

Stay in bed a little longer.

Make a coffee.

Find a local café for breakfast and sit there as long as you like.

In Whitby, you can wander down towards the harbour, watch the boats coming and going and take your time exploring the little independent shops and cafés around the town.

And if you’re staying somewhere with a sea view, you don’t even need to go anywhere straight away.

Sometimes the best part of a holiday is simply sitting together, looking out at the sea and deciding what you’re going to do with the rest of the day.

Go for a walk with nowhere to be

The Yorkshire Coast is made for walking.

And when you’re not trying to entertain the whole family, you can actually enjoy it.

Walk along Whitby’s West Cliff, head towards Sandsend or make your way over to Robin Hood’s Bay. Take a flask of coffee, stop whenever you fancy and don’t worry about how long the walk takes.

The scenery changes constantly, from dramatic cliffs and wide beaches to little fishing villages and quiet stretches of coastline.

And if you’ve brought the dog, even better.

A couples’ break doesn’t necessarily mean leaving the four-legged member of the family behind.

Rediscover Whitby

Whitby is somewhere you can visit again and again without feeling like you’ve done everything.

Walk through the old town. Browse the independent shops. Head up to Whitby Abbey. Stop for coffee. Wander along the harbour.

Then, when your legs have had enough, find somewhere for lunch.

There’s no need to build a military-style itinerary.

That’s the beauty of a couples’ break.

You can spend two hours wandering around Whitby and have absolutely no idea what you’re doing for the next two.

That’s called relaxing.

Find somewhere beautiful for lunch

Holiday lunches are different.

Maybe it’s fish and chips overlooking the sea.

Maybe it’s a cosy pub tucked away somewhere in the countryside.

Maybe you find a little café that you wouldn’t normally have time to stop at.

The Yorkshire Coast has plenty of options, and one of the joys of visiting as a couple is being able to follow your appetite rather than a timetable.

And, of course, there’s always room for ice cream.

You’re on holiday. The calories don’t count until you get home.

Explore somewhere new together

One of the easiest ways to make a Yorkshire Coast break feel like a proper escape is to get out and explore beyond the town you’re staying in.

Spend an afternoon in Robin Hood’s Bay, wander through the narrow streets of Staithes, head north towards Runswick Bay, or make your way to Saltburn for a completely different feel.

You don’t need to travel for hours.

That’s one of the great things about the Yorkshire Coast. There are so many places close together that you can see somewhere new without spending half your holiday in the car.

And then there’s sunset…

There’s something about watching the sun go down by the sea that makes a holiday feel like a holiday.

Find a bench.

Walk along the beach.

Grab a takeaway.

Or simply sit somewhere with a view and watch the colours change over the water.

It’s the sort of thing that’s easy to overlook when you’re busy trying to get everyone home, fed and into bed.

When it’s just the two of you, you can actually stop and enjoy it.

Make the evening yours

And perhaps this is where a couples’ break really comes into its own.

Go out for dinner.

Find a cosy pub.

Have a drink.

Take a late evening walk through Whitby or Scarborough.

Or get some food, head back to your accommodation and put your feet up.

There’s no pressure to fill every minute.

Sometimes a perfect holiday evening is simply sitting together, talking and realising that neither of you has said, “What time do we need to leave?” for several hours.

Where to stay for a couples’ break

Of course, where you stay can make a huge difference.

For a quiet and cosy escape, The Old Tack Room in Sleights is a lovely option. This one-bedroom barn conversion has a more peaceful countryside feel while still putting you within easy reach of Whitby and the coast.

If sea views are high on the list, Seascape in Scarborough gives you views across North Bay and is also dog friendly, making it a great choice if your other four-legged half is coming along too.

And for something particularly peaceful and romantic, The Annex offers countryside surroundings, stunning views towards Whitby Abbey and the sea, a private patio and a log burner. It’s the sort of place where you can happily spend an evening doing absolutely nothing.

You don’t need the kids to have a holiday

Family holidays are brilliant.

But there’s something different about getting away as a couple.

You notice more.

You walk further.

You sit longer.

You actually finish a conversation.

And you remember that the Yorkshire Coast isn’t somewhere you only visit when you’re taking the children to the beach.

It’s somewhere you can come back to, just the two of you, and experience in a completely different way.

So if the kids are back at school, have grown up, or you’re simply overdue a few days away together…

Maybe it’s time to rediscover the Yorkshire Coast.
