Easter in Whitby

The naming of the celebration as “Easter” seems to go back to the name of a pre-Christian goddess in England, Eostre, who was celebrated at beginning of spring. The only reference to this goddess comes from the writings of the Venerable Bede, a British monk who lived in the late seventh and early eighth century.

Easter is the Christian festival that celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ and his promise of eternal life. Christians celebrate Easter to remember the great sacrifice that Jesus made. Although Christians believe that Jesus is not physically among us, they trust that he is still present in our hearts.

One explanation for this custom is that eggs were formerly a forbidden food during Lent, so people would paint and decorate them to mark the end of the period of penance and fasting, then eat them on Easter as a celebration. Easter egg hunts and egg rolling are two popular egg-related traditions.

What food do we eat on Easter?

  • Chocolate eggs. Symbolises: New life, rebirth, fertility, and the brightness of spring. …
  • Hot cross buns. Symbolises: The cross on top symbolises the crucifixion, the spices may also symbolise spices used to embalm Jesus after the crucifixion. …
  • Simnel cake. …
  • Roast lamb. …
  • Easter bread. …
  • Easter bunny bakes. …
  • Carrots…
  • Cooked ham.
