Know more about Slaithes…

Staithes is perhaps best-known for its links with Captain Cook. The young James Cook came to Staithes in 1745 at the age of 16 to apprentice to a grocer and chandler named William Sanderson. The apprenticeship did not last long; Cook fell in love with the sea and pined to become a sailor.

Staithes is where the North York Moors meets the coastline a perfectly secluded small sandy beach. It’s a gorgeous fishing village with a cosy harbour; a destination for geologist and fossil hunters; and, perhaps most famously, the home of a community of well-known artists.

Staithes charms have drawn filmmakers over the years such as Paul Thomas Anderson, who filmed scenes there recently for his Oscar winning feature film Phantom Thread, starring Daniel Day-Lewis.

It is not designed for cars, so parking is on the cliff tops. You can drive into the village to drop-off bags and supplies; there is a 40-minute parking allowance on the main street, 30 metres from Dunsley’s door. Glen Vale Car Park is the closest parking solution to the old village. This private car park is situated behind 78 Staithes Lane (TS13 5AD) in a secluded location and has around 60 parking bays available to rent for the duration of your stay. A 24 Hour Permit is £10 per vehicle and is Valid from 12 noon on your day of arrival until 12 noon on your day of departure. Parking Permits are Non- Refundable. There are no defined disabled parking bays in the village, but we are happy for visitors with passengers who have special needs to be dropped off in the village but ask that if possible they return their cars to the public car parks at the top.

Sanderson introduced him to a friend named John Walker, a Quaker shipowner living in Whitby. Walker agreed to take Cook on as an apprentice, and he moved to Whitby.

From there he joined the Royal Navy and became famous for his voyages of discovery to Australia, New Zealand, and Hawaii.

The Sanderson shop where Cook worked was destroyed by a storm in 1745. Parts of the shop were incorporated into a new building known as Captain Cook’s Cottage at the harbourside end of Church Street.
